Leighla and I more waddled than walked to Miss Elein’s shop, the two of us still stuffed full of rich cheeses, meats, and sweets. Duja and Irving decided to head back to their house while we picked up the gowns.

Strolling out of the curtained room, I gasped at her ensemble. Clad in an empire-waisted gown of midnight black, I couldn’t keep my eyes from the neck like that plunged down to her navel. The long sleeves flowed off of her arms like wings. On her throat and ears were rubies with silver dragons curled around the precious gems.

Half her mouth curled up as she tilted her chin forward. Her luscious, curly hair flounced. “My Pair made it. She has a talent for serpents.” She smirked and gestured to the side, “Right this way, ladies.”

Following her into the room, I saw all of our things neatly tucked into boxes and tied up with strings. I made my way to pick up the stack that appeared to be mine. Miss Elein casually leaned against the wall. A wicked and lovely vision in black. Something reminded me of how little I knew about the power of decay.

“I was told that you wouldn’t be needing jewels tonight.” Winged eyes slid to Leighla as she shrugged. Stepping closer to me, she held my stare and said, “A word of caution, gorgeous as that commander is, people tend to get whisked away in the Harvesting Festival. You’re quiet, but I can see that you are drawn to dangerous things. The Mennins have all done questionable things. Make sure you really know him.”

Leighla scowled at my side. “Absolutely none of that tonight, Elein. I’ve known Khaled my whole life. He is one of the best men I’ve ever met. Much better than those power-greedy Mennins that fall all over themselves for the first woman who will look their way,” Leighla said.

Elein continued to lounge there for a moment, picking her nails. Finally, she spoke, “Remember that it is your choice. You choose how far it goes. And if something happens, it's your word over theirs, and we both know you would win. The Goddess is an excellent avenger.”

Silence hung in the room for several moments.

“Well, I think perhaps it's time for the final payment.” I smiled wide and let the large pouch clink on the small table next to the waiting chairs, and Elein’s eyes glittered.

“Now, when my patroness treats me so well, how can I help but protect her,” Elein schmoozed. I returned that wicked smile with one of my own.
